Hugo Cardona

Hugo Cardona was born in Guatemala in 1984. While studying business administration in 2002, Cardona began his career as a self-taught painting artist. His self-organized exhibitions increasingly attract the attention of the public. In 2004- 2005 he became a course teacher for painting and at the same time a gallery owner in the Central American Gallery in Antigua (Guatemala).

In 2004, his commitment and potential received special recognition when he, nominated by the international cultural center “El Sitio”, received a four-month scholarship in Peru at the “Diego Quispe Tito” University of Fine Arts in Cuzco, which promoted his artistic development. This was followed by exhibitions in Guatemala, Peru, France, the USA and Germany. From 2009-2014 he studied in Karlsruhe with Professor Franz Ackermann at the State Academy of Fine Arts, where he was proposed as a master student after graduating. He lived in South America, the USA and Europe for several months at a time. This is an important element of his art. As an active participant and at the same time a perspective observer, he experiences a wide variety of cultures with all their similarities and differences. Ultimately, people and their everyday environment are the raw material for his work.

Cardona says: “I am like a filter, take information and give it back in my own language.” With colors and shapes, the artist can tell stories without using a single word. It draws attention to the moment. He leaves the viewer of his art enough space for his own interpretations. So things that at first glance have nothing to do with each other belong together. In the course of contemplation, form and color combine to create a harmonious, sometimes amusing, but always intentionally positive view of the moments of real life in the here and now. Many of his works are now internationally owned, for example in Norway, Brazil, Japan, USA, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Australia, London, Switzerland, Spain. Cardona now lives in Germany and is active with his own initiatives and projects that focus on art as a medium.
